Stacy

Standing on the edge of the bridge Stacy’s stomach turned in knots looking down into the dark waters far below her. She stood there feeling so cold and alone. Her mind raced over her life and all the disappointments she has suffered through her life. The long list of failures where she has let down the ones she love’s so much. The trail of her tears streamed down her face as she contemplated the worth of her life.

She stood there at the railing trying to raise her courage to climb over the railing and plung her life into the abyss of nothingness. Where she would no longer have to hurt and the pain would go away. This way she would no longer be a disappointment to her family and they would not longer have to worry about how she was going to mess up their wonderful lives. They would be better off without her in their lives.

Looking around making sure she was alone on the bridge because if someone was to stop her she would lose her nerve and not jump. Her heart started to quicken her mouth went dry she felt like she was going to suffocate willing herself to pull herself up on to the railing and swing her legs over. Her heart jumped into her throat as she looked down into the dark nothingness. Her head swam with vertigo as she took a deep breath and closed her eyes and let go of the railing and she could feel the adrenaline rush through her body as she started to fall through the air.

Feeling the warm wind rush past her face she prayed for the landing to come quick and the pain would be over quickly. As she fell she envisioned her body floating down the river where it would be found by someone. Who would then call the emergency people who would come and pronouncer her dead. Then her family would be told about how her body was found in the river. By that time they will have found her note she had hidden in her desk describing how she was going to take her life and they would no longer have to worry about her being a disappointment.

She could picture her own funeral in her mind yes, they would be sorry she was no longer there. They would realize how important she was to them. She hopped they would feel just a portion of the pain she now felt as she plummeted to her certain death. They would all finely realize how much they had hurt her. They would understand the pain she has been feeling inside. It would soon all be over once she hit the river.

Wondering why it was taking so long for her to finally hit the water she opened her eyes to see where she was at and why she had not hit the water. When her eyes opened she realized she had only fallen a foot. She looked up at the railing and her heart skipped a beat as she saw two figures standing at the railing.

Stacy not comprehending what she had seen realized she did not want to die. She screamed in terror as she watched her life pass before her eyes and all she seen was the good people who had stood beside her and helped her in life. She understood she was not the failure she felt that she was but also comprehend it was too late to stop. She now just wishes it would be quick and painless and that the ones who loved her would forgive her for this selfish act. The impact of the water brought her to reality as the pain ripped through her body as she felt her bones crunch under the impact. The pain was so excruciating she had one last thought before everything went dark “its not suppose to hurt this bad.”

Invisible

“Ok, so we have Alexander the Great leading his armies through this region hear.” said the teacher as he pointed his telescoping pointer at the map that was pulled down in front of the chalk board. The teacher turned toward his students who comprised of mainly senior’s who was part of what the student body would call the popular group. Along the back row sat the high school jocks that never really paid attention to the teachers only enough to harass him about what he was teaching.

Along the far side going back to the back row sat the cheerleaders the smarter ones sat towards the front while the ones who wanted to flirt with the jocks sat towards the back. The front few rows sat the nerds or the students who would pay attention and were there to learn what was being taught. Then dispersed through out the class were other groups of students.

Sitting towards the back near one of the doors sat a young man who had dark unwashed hair, he wore black hoodies most of the time with the name of either one death metal band or another. His pants were generally torn and being held together by safety pins. He never did talk to the other students and kept to himself.

“RING, RING” Squealed the bell to inform the students it was time to change class, the students picked up there books and headed for the door.

“Oh, don’t forget your reports are due next week?” Spoke the teacher in louder voice than normal to make sure each of his students heard him over the noise created from all the students getting up at once to leave.

As the students arose to leave the back row of Jocks filed out behind the kid with the unwashed hair and each of the jocks teasingly smacked the back of his head or flipped his ears with the last of the group spitting a loogie into his hair. The players busted up laughing as they exited the door.

“Hey, why don’t you take a shower once in while? You loser” said the kid who hocked the loogie into the young mans hair.

The other kids in the class either laughed or diverted there eyes as they left the class room. The young mans face turned red with humiliation and anger. Fighting back the tears of anger he grabbed his books and headed for the door. Taking his hand he tried to wipe the spit from his hair.

As he walked out into the hall he could see the jocks standing in a semi circle like they were waiting for some one to come out of the class. He walked passed them giving them a dirty look wishing they would all just disappear.

“This is going to be so funny.” said one of the jocks to the others. Looking back the young man could see them holding a large cup filled with an unknown substance behind there back.

A crowed had started to build around the jocks as the other students could tell they were going to be in for some entertainment. as a girl came out of the class room one of the Jocks said “Katie, where’s Jason?”

Looking totally confused Katie looked at the jock and said “He is right there he just walked past you?” as she pointed down the hall.

Jason hearing his name looked back and saw Katie pointing at him.

“What!” They turned and looked down the hall towards where Jason was standing.

But none of the jocks seemed to look at Jason they just seem to be looking past him.

“How, the hell did he get past us?” said one of the Jocks

“Where did he go?” exclaimed another

“No way, Katie he has to be still in the class room!” exclaimed the jock who had spit into Jason’s hair stepping past Katie he looked into the now empty class room.

The other Jocks taking Katie’s word ran down the hallway right past Jason as if he was not even there. Craning there heads to see if they could find there victim through the crowded halls. Katie stood there looking into the eyes of Jason confounded as the jocks ran right past him.

Jason feeling relived of his good fortune quickly turned and slipped away into the crowd.

“Katie, where did you Jason was?” asked the big jock

“Stephen, he was just right there 5 seconds ago heading towards the stairway.” responded Katie.

“Shit, well he may have gotten away this time but we will get that little basterd” commented Stephen as he walked off down the hall.

“Steve, just leave him alone” Katie called after Stephen as he walked off.

Katie turned to head the opposite direction when she turned and ran into her history teacher Mr. Taylor.

Mr. Taylor was in his mid 30’s he wore non descript glasses his hair was starting to gray along the temples and made him look older than he really was. His face was non descript with no outstanding features. He wore a black slacks and button down shirt and looking out of place on him he had a pocket protector in his right breast pocked which held many different pens along with his lecture pointer. He stood about 5’11 with a thin muscular build.

“Katie, May I have a word with you?” asked Mr. Taylor

“Ah Yes.” Replied Katie as he gestured towards his room.

Katie stepped into his class room followed by Mr. Taylor. She turned to face him and as she looked at him she could feel his eyes bore into her as he stared. Feeling Katie becoming more uncomfortable under his penetrating gaze, Mr. Taylor cleared his throat and asked. “When you were pointing down the hall who were you pointing at?”

Looking confused at the question she hesitantly responded “I was pointing at Jason Harper.” Her voice filled with a question of, why are you asking me such a dumb question.

“Ok, thank you. You may go now you better hurry the bell will be ringing soon.” responded Mr. Taylor.
